Product Description

For years Marie Bachmann thought of herself as the "good" daughter. She was the most loving to their mother, the most dedicated to their Amish way of life. But when a Mennonite farmhand, Gordon Martin, shows interest in her she can''t help but be flattered--until her mother sends her off to Florida. While there, Marie begins spending time with bad-boy Eli Jacob, the bishop''s son from back home.

When Gordon shows up in Florida to volunteer in a homeless shelter, her life becomes even more complicated. At the same time her aunt begins telling her of a Civil War-era ancestor and the woman''s uncommon bravery . . . a story that begins to work at Marie''s heart.

Marie hopes returning home may simplify life, but Eli soon follows. As Marie grapples with whether she should court Eli or leave the church for Gordon, the story of Annie Bachmann shines a light on what God has for Marie''s future.

Born into the structured culture of the Amish church, Marie Bachmann easily developed a legalistic, judgmental view of the world and those around her. Following the strict teachings of the church and her dictatorial mother, Marie expects to spend her adult life as the idyllic, Amish farm wife. She daydreams of marrying Elijah Jacobs, the bishop’s son. Her only concerns are her future home and family; nevertheless, Marie is fascinated by Gordon Martin’s dedication to serving others. Gordon is an altruistic, musical Mennonite who works for her brother. Her world and her world view begin to shift when she is sent to Florida for a vacation with Aunt Suz, the keeper of the family oral tradition. As an example of serving others, Aunt Suz tells Marie the story of her great-great-great Aunt Annie Bachmann. A Simple Singing traces the journey of Marie as her experiences and the examples of Annie show her that compassion is better than judgment both for herself and others.

As with Leslie Gould’s earlier books, A Simple Singing is a story of spiritual growth and self-discovery. I enjoyed the believable characters and story lines. I like the blend of present and historical plots which Ms. Gould interweaves with finesse in The Sisters of Lancaster County series; she is a good story-teller. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a good book with a Christian theme. I found it difficult to put down once I started reading.

I love these time slip historical novels Leslie Gould has been writing. This is the 2nd in the Sisters of Lancaster County trilogy. Marie, the middle sister, thinks of herself as the "good" sister, always living by the strict rules of the Amish ways that she grew up with. She considers herself the loving daughter. Her days are full helping her mother in the home and dreaming of becoming the wife of an Amish farmer and a mother.

But life becomes complicated for Marie when she suddenly has two men to choose from. First, there is Gordon, the farm hand on her family''s farm. He shares her love of singing. But he doesn''t have a farm and he is Mennonite, not Amish. Then there is Jacob, the bishop''s son. He will be taking over his family farm. But he is in Florida and a little bit on the wild side. Her mother and the bishop decide that Marie''s upright Amish ways would be a good influence on Jacob. So she is sent to Florida with her Aunt Suz.

Florida is a completely new environment for Marie. Shorts and t-shirts, bathing suits, church in a building. Amish, Mennonite, and Englisch mingling together. Time with Eli. What happens when Gordon shows up in Florida to work in a homeless shelter? Marie begins to see with new eyes. She sees the true hearts of both Gordon and Elijah and she sees her true heart with those new eyes.

Aunt Suz is the keeper of the family history. While in Florida she begins telling Marie the story of their ancestor Annie Bachmann. Annie had lived through extremely difficult times during the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg. Marie learns how Annie nursed wounded soldiers; took care of her ailing sister-in-law; and chose between her Amish suitor, and a Yankee soldier. By hearing Annie''s story and how she came to make difficult decisions helped Marie make a very important decision herself.

I am looking forward to the next book in "The Sisters of Lancaster County" series.

Leslie Gould researches her topic. She adds historic and geographic facts that enhance the believability of her characters and plots. As one reads, they think about finding an atlas or googling the setting of the plot. I am eager to see what Leslie Gould writes next.

This book has everything I look for in a book. I fell in love with the characters, I like that Leslie showed human frailty in her story, I love that she emphasized grace over rules as a way to draw close to God.
